Male Breast Surgery on the Increase

Figures show that increasing numbers of men are undergoing breast reduction surgery in the UK.

Over the last five years the number of men having the surgery has doubled to 790, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

The condition where men develop breast tissue is known as gynaecomastia. Not only can it be embarrassing but it can also be uncomfortable and cause sore nipples.

While many assume that gynaecomastia is the result of obesity, it can actually be due to a hormone imbalance, or come about through an adverse reaction to medication.

For many boys and men, they are most concerned with the stigma attached to having ‘man boobs’. That is why men are increasingly making use of the advanced surgical options and having male breast reduction surgery.

According to the BBC, research suggests that many men don’t want to have to wait to have the operation on the NHS, and would rather go the private route than be stuck filling out paperwork and bureaucracy.

Jasper Gill, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, said:  “For many men gynaecomastia can often be corrected with relatively minor surgery involving liposuction with or without the need to remove breast tissue through a separate cut around the nipple.”
